Mad dogs and Englishmen*

That old line about mad dogs and Englishmen going out in the midday sun kept popping into my head as we were out here this morning.   Although technically speaking, it is before nine o'clock in the morning and nowhere near midday yet, but it's already 28C **, and on such days we get out early so Sienna doesn't burn her tootsies on the pavement.
But it's true, I do indeed have English blood in me.
Additionally it's good to see we have a sane dog...
This is the little dress I made out of one of Craig's old polo Tshirts, and the scant remaining scraps from the striped business shirt I made for him.  It has proved itself a fantastic little knockabout dress for hot days, I'm so super happy with how it turned out.  It's not glamorous, but so comfy, cool and practical, and was basically like a free dress.

Dress; my own design, based very loosely on Burda 8071, made from an old polo Tshirt and striped cotton, for the lowdown see the details here
Sandals; Sportscraft, from David Jones
Nail varnish; Bright Light, BYS
Sunnies; RayBan

*"Mad Dogs and Englishmen" a song by Noel Coward, 1931
**28C = 83F in the old measurements
Sienna thinking, oh boy, here we go again with the photos (doggie eye-roll), well, I'll just wait over here in the shade while you get on with it...

  1. That is a *cute* casual dress. It's hard to believe it's 9am in that photo - it LOOKS hot!!!

  2. Oh you poor thing, you're STILL sweltering over there?! At least you have a ton of fabulously cool clothes though.... I'd be wearing the same tank and skirt all summer. ;)

  3. How cute! I never would have guessed it was a poloshirt! A very clever and green idea!

  4. I love the stripes & navy! So pretty :-)

  5. Very clever that it is a polo shirt! Thanks for all the advice about tracing Burda patterns. I'm going to try the plastic table cloth next.

  6. Love this little dress. Refashions like this are becoming my passion. I just love making something great like this some something that would otherwise be tossed.

  7. Funny how the things you just 'throw together' end up being a favorite, isn't it? Although I must admit, the words 'throw together' really don't describe your fantastic sewing! On another note, I hope it cools down a little for you, and warms up for us!
I am so looking forward to more of your sewing creations!

  8. Your photos are superb, and such blue skies - it's making me wish summer has were.

I love your polo shirt dress, you look so cool and laid back, even if it is 28C!

  9. 'free' dresses are the best, I love it when I can see new potential in something old. You did a great job as always!

  10. That dress is my favourite mashup of yours from last year! And "free is so very, very bueno", especially on a scorcher. Isn't it supposed to be fall over there now? LOL

Sienna's no dumb puppy. She's got your number. :)

  11. Oh, I remember this refashion, and thinking that some of hubby's old polos in the refashioning box ought to be turned into something similar. I still think that, but have been sidetracked ...:) Hope you stay cool the rest of the day!

  12. oh i love that dress, it looks perfect for summertime!

  13. this was so beautiful and peaceful and made me happy for you.
